Update:

The future of Sony’s next console—what will likely be the PlayStation 6—has not yet been fully decided. And while it is certain that there will be a successor to the PlayStation 5, the company has stated that details such as its price and release date have not yet been finalized internally.

During a recent Q&A with investors, Sony CEO and President Hiroki Totoki addressed the question of how the current RAM shortage will affect the company’s future plans for the next generation of consoles. During the call, Totoki stated that the company has not yet decided on a launch window or the final price. He later explained that this is because, with increases in RAM, the cost of both materials and manufacturing also rises, so this would be reflected throughout the entire process. “We would like to really observe and follow the situation,” Totoki commented. “Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high in FY 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply. So under that assumption, we must think carefully about what we will do.”

At the same time, it was also reported that Sony might be looking for a new business model and products to help address the problems caused by this rise in memory prices.

Once again, we have another product affected by the growth of AI tools and the various hardware components they use. Recently, PlayStation had to raise the price of the PlayStation 5 family for this reason, and it hasn’t been the only hardware to do so, with Nintendo announcing a price increase for the Switch 2 this morning. On the other hand, other upcoming hardware, such as Valve’s new Steam Machine, also had to delay its launch due to rising prices for RAM and storage.
