Sony speaks out after controversy over the end of physical media on PlayStation: “We’re moving forward”

For many, Sony’s corporate silence following the announcement that it would phase out physical media on PlayStation consoles was as baffling as it was offensive. Now, one month after the controversial announcement, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, has stepped forward to speak on behalf of the company. She defends the decision based on market trends over the past few years, noting that the pressure exerted by users to date has not achieved the desired result of reversing the controversial measure.

On July 1, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced one of the biggest changes in the entire history of PlayStation: starting in January 2028, discs will no longer be produced for new video games released on its consoles. At the time, the company justified the move by citing changing consumer habits and the growing dominance of digital distribution, but since that announcement, it had barely addressed the massive backlash from a large portion of its community. In recent weeks, numerous users have taken advantage of virtually every PlayStation social media post to express their dissatisfaction and demand a reversal, even going so far as to organize protests and boycotts against the brand.

Almost a month later, Sony has finally addressed the controversy head-on. During a Q&A session held on July 31, the company’s chief financial officer, Lin Tao, explained that there are “several reasons” behind the decision, though she highlighted one above all others: “The digitization of content in general has been advancing; that is the main factor.” According to the executive, this trend affects not only PlayStation but “all types of content.” Tao added that Sony spent “a lot of thought and time” studying the change before reaching a conclusion and confirmed that the company will “ cautiously move this forward” with its plans.

Therefore, these statements leave little hope for those who were hoping that pressure from the community would cause Sony to reconsider its position. The company acknowledges having received numerous comments and admits that some players hold very firm views on the matter. Tao even stated that Sony “understands those emotions,” noting that video games are closely tied to fond memories for many people. However, this acknowledgment falls on deaf ears since it is not accompanied by any indication of a reversal: Sony remains committed to a 100% digital future and says it will continue to explore how to engage with its users in this new landscape.
