Sony surprisingly updates PS3 and adds improvements almost 20 years after its release

The update is necessary if you use your PS3 as a Blu-ray player.

PlayStation 3

In an unexpected move, Sony has released an update for the PlayStation 3, almost two decades after its original release. The update, which brings the system up to version 4.92, focuses primarily on improving the system’s performance and stability. This news has come as a surprise to many, as the last significant update for the PS3 was released about a year ago.

One of the highlights of this update is the renewal of the Blu-ray player encryption key. This is critical for users who still use their PS3 to play Blu-ray discs, as it ensures continued compatibility with new Blu-ray releases. The update requires at least 200MB of free space on the PS3 hard drive or removable storage device.

In addition, the update includes enhancements to system security to ensure the console remains secure and functional in today’s digital environment. Sony has made minor adjustments to the user interface to improve the user experience, although these changes are not immediately noticeable.

To install the update, users must connect their PS3 to the Internet and select “Settings” > “System Update” > “Update via Internet”. Alternatively, the update can be performed manually using a FAT32 formatted USB drive by creating a folder called “PS3″ in the root directory and another folder called “UPDATE” within it where the downloaded update file should be placed.

It is also clear to no one that these surprise updates have the secondary purpose of making it a little more difficult for those who want to work normally with a pirated console, especially on those machines that still have access to a digital store. In this regard, Sony has closed the credit card payment, but it is still possible to buy games digitally on PS3 through gift cards, so the company continues and will continue to tinker with the security of the system, even if only once a year.
