Sony

Sony wants to buy From Software (Elden Ring) and is in negotiations to acquire its owner (Kadokawa Corporation)

The creators of Dark Souls, Sekiro and Bloodborne could soon become a PlayStation first-party studio with such a big move.

From Software

What if From Software became Sony’s first party? Can you imagine a Dark Souls 4 exclusive for PlayStation 5? Or a future where there is a patch for Bloodborne on PS5. Even better, how about a Bloodborne 2? Utopia might be closer than we think. According to Reuters, Sony is in talks to buy Kadokawa Corporation, the company that owns From Software (Elden Ring, Sekiro). Kind of like buying Take Two and taking Rockstar and GTA 6 with it.

Obviously, Sony is not buying Kadokawa Corporation just for From Software. We think of Miyazaki because we are obsessed with Yharnam, but there are many other reasons to be interested in the acquisition. For example, in addition to the creators of Elden Ring, PlayStation would be acquiring Spike Chunsoft, the developer of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero and up to five Dragon Quest games.

The scope of the acquisition extends beyond the video game industry. Kadokawa Corporation also includes the companies and magazines responsible for such successful manga and light novels as ‘Deadman Wonderland’ and ‘Re:Zero. Even film distributors responsible for Japanese feature films and international anime sales. The company has so many tentacles that its capitalization reaches $2.7 billion, although, as Reuters points out, its business figures have been declining in recent years, during which it has had to deal with the resignation of its CEO and several cyber attacks.

Although both Sony and Kadokawa have refused to comment to Reuters, let’s not forget that PlayStation already acquired 2% of the company (and more specifically, From Software) in 2022. Who knows. Maybe the Bloodborne patch for PS5 and Bloodborne 2 are closer than ever.
