‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ breaks the internet and outperforms GTA 6: all the secrets of its first trailer
The first trailer for the new Marvel and Sony film breaks viewership records in its first 24 hours.
Marvel has done it again. In fact, the first official trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ the new MCU Spider-Man film produced in collaboration with Sony Pictures, has broken all records by reaching 500 million views in its first 24 hours, surpassing the record previously held by Rockstar Games with the GTA 6 trailer, which accumulated 475 million views during the same time period. This unprecedented milestone foreshadows the massive success that Tom Holland’s new Spider-Man movie will achieve when it premieres this coming July in theaters. And to celebrate this milestone, we want to go over all the secrets, Easter eggs, and fun facts from a trailer that brings us back to the street-smart Spider-Man—details that many fans have surely overlooked.
All the secrets of the ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ trailer
According to the latest updates, the film has far surpassed that figure, setting a new record and a benchmark for future audiovisual productions. Sony Pictures will soon confirm the official statistics, further cementing this achievement. In fact, within a matter of hours, preliminary estimates indicated that it had already surpassed the previous record held by Grand Theft Auto VI, which had achieved 475 million views in a single day.
This overwhelming response from the general public comes on the heels of the success of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which grossed over $1 billion worldwide and became the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie in history. Furthermore, the record set by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is even more impressive when you consider that the trailer was leaked twice in recent months. In the end, Sony’s controversial tactic of releasing several clips the day before has paid off.
That’s why we want to take another look at the first trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to uncover all its secrets and Easter eggs. First up, the villains: we get fleeting glimpses of Michael Mando’s Scorpion, who briefly appeared in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ nine years ago, as well as Boomerang and Tarantula, two recurring Spider-Man villains from the comics who appear recreating some iconic covers of the arachnid superhero in Marvel Comics.
On the other hand, we see that MJ has a new love interest; while many believe it could be Harry Osborn, the truth is that it could very well be Paul, a boyfriend of Mary Jane’s in the comics whom fans hated because of the ridiculousness of his storyline. On the other hand, the confrontation between Spider-Man and the Punisher reveals that the two already know each other, a clear reference to Daredevil. Will we see the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in the film? The ones who are there are the soldiers of the Hand, from that same universe. By the way, the frame where Spider-Man lunges at these villains is said to be edited, just as was done in the ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ trailer when the other two Spider-Men were removed. Are there actually other characters jumping alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?
Speaking of ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ in one scene we see that Wilson Fisk no longer appears to be the mayor of New York, as a woman we previously saw in the series starring Charlie Cox takes his place, presenting Spidey with the key to the city in recognition of his service. Let’s hope the upcoming second season of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ sheds more light on this.
On the other hand, the rumored mutation that Peter Parker will undergo has been confirmed: he will gradually lose his humanity in favor of his spider genetics, gaining organic web-shooters like those of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, which will affect his personality and mental stability. Will we see Peter transformed into a monstrous spider like in the comics? For now, we know that Bruce Banner will try to help him, though it’s possible that the Hulk could become yet another antagonist—controlled by Jean Grey as the Gray Hulk?
In certain scenes, we see several characters being mentally controlled. Everything points to the mutant Jean Grey, played by Sadie Sink from ‘Stranger Things,’ being the one responsible. Although we don’t see the actress’s face, she does appear in a couple of scenes—one from behind and another tied to a chair—as the Department of Damage Control pursues her. And speaking of the X-Men, we see a clear nod to Rogue when Spidey crashes into the windows of a bus, where a girl who looks just like the mutant is listening to music with headphones on: is it just a nod, or is it really her?
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ hits theaters on July 31.
