Splatoon 3 to end content updates after 2 years of service, with the final Splatfest now concluded
After two years of live service, content updates, and community events, Splatoon 3 will now end regular updates, as devs move on from the title.
So long, Squid Kids: after 2 straight years of content updates, events, and a powerful and lively community of players and developers that flooded the game since its release, Splatoon 3 is set to end major updates with the end of its final Splatfest, which took place this past weekend.
The announcement came straight from the official Splatoon Twitter/X account, as they posted the unfortunate turn of events, while also assuring players and fans that the game servers will remain open with a rotating lineup of thematic events. Just as well, they also confirmed that balancing updates for the game’s weapons will continue to be released as they are needed, while special modes will continue to be live “for the time being”.
The above message reads: “After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close. Don’t worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes! Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being.”
The end of Splatoon 3 comes right at the perfect time for a follow-up
While the news that the game will no longer receive any major updates can be disappointing to many fans of the title, its timing is also curiously adequate to the situation Nintendo is currently in. The Japanese publisher and developer has already revealed that news about its next hardware launch is coming before the end of this fiscal year, placing a possible announcement at the latest during the month of April 2025.
This date window would fit with the battery of games presented in the most recent Nintendo Direct. They were announcements that were quietly extended for months, as if there was no new console on the way. Now we know that it was exactly that, although it is hard to imagine because of the number of years that this miracle has been behind him. Could it be possible that the developers of the Splatoon series are already working on a new title for the upcoming console, which fans refer to as the “Nintendo Switch 2″? And if so, would it be more Splatoon, or something else entirely?
