Split Fiction creator slams microtransactions and looks forward to GTA VI
Fares, as always, without a filter.

Josef Fares is known for being the director behind 2021’s GOTY It Takes Two, and for his iconic speech against the Oscars at The Game Awards 2017. His personality is completely transparent, always showing a relaxed yet direct character with an expression full of charisma. In a recent video on the Fall Damage YouTube channel, the Split Fiction creative responded to YouTube comments on various trailers for his games.
His stance on microtransactions, female representation in Split Fiction and GTA VI
One of the first comments Fares responded to mentioned: “No loot boxes, no microtransactions, no BS. Words to live by!” In response, the director was blunt about how these practices negatively affect the industry.
“I think that those kind of shits affects the design, and how a game should be done,” Fares says. “Every time you make a decision, a design decision taken on you making more money from the game, I think it is a huge problem and it is stopping our industry from a creative perspective.
Another of the comments said that Split Fiction (you can read our opinion here) was about “another ‘feminism propaganda’ soaked game”. The reaction to Fares’ stunned face was immediate and unfiltered: “What the f#ck is this? I guess that is someone overreacting that there are two women? Let me say this: in Brothers [A Tale of Two Sons] there were two guys, in A Way Out there were two guys, in It Takes Two there was one guy and one woman. And now there are two girls and everybody is complaining? Come on! I mean, let’s face this. They are based on my daughters. I don’t care what you have between your legs. That’s totally not interesting to me. Good characters is what is important.

Finally, Fares responded to a comment that Split Fiction could be “the best game of 2025” and deserve an award. His answer was humble and realistic: “Thank you! I would really appreciate we won Game of the Year again. But, on the other hand, you know, I’m a huge of GTA. I think if that comes out it’s going to be really tough. And I really want it to come out because I’m a huge fan.”
