‘Squid Game’ creator promises more blood in new season along with “a deeper story”

The second season of the hit Korean drama arrives on Netflix on Thursday, December 26.

In September 2021, a South Korean series took over Netflix and became the most-watched content in the platform’s history, surpassing ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Stranger Things’. It garnered over 142 million views in its first month, and even South Korea’s broadband provider sued Netflix for the traffic the phenomenon was causing. We are, of course, talking about ‘Squid Game, a K-drama in which 456 contestants with financial problems and not much to lose go to a deserted island to take part in a competition. They have to play child games to try to win a prize of about 28 million pounds while being watched by armed guards. You can only leave the island for two reasons: you have won the prize or you have died trying.

The British media The Guardian interviewed ‘Squid Game’ director Hwang Dong-hyuk before the premiere of the show’s second season on December 26. The Korean spent 12 years preparing the show, knowing it would be a hit, but was surprised by how it spread around the world. Now he looks back and promises that Season 2 will have “more blood.”

More blood than the first season

The South Korean director clears up doubts about whether the second season will be bloodier than the first: “I saw so much fake blood in season one, I’ve kind of become immune to it. Hard to say. Both seasons are very bloody!”. In the end, though, he tipped the scales. There is more blood this time. That I can promise. But there are comical moments too,” says Hwang Dong-hyuk.

After the success of the first season of ‘Squid Game,’ the creator feels minimal pressure for the sequel. “For the past three years, people have constantly asked if I can do even better. It would be a lie to pretend I don’t feel pressure but I tried not to dwell on it and it didn’t influence me creatively. Even if season one hadn’t done so well, I’d still be trying to better it, just for my own personal pride. All I can do is stay loyal to the story I want to tell,” admits Hwang Dong-hyuk.
