  • NOTE: Spoilers for the ‘Squid Game’ Season 1 finale are included below.

The finale of ‘Squid Game’ Season 1 has been etched in the minds of fans of the series, as the final moments of the series were, unsurprisingly, dominated by the duel to the death between Seong Gi-hun and Sang-woo. In short, Sang-woo surprises everyone by committing suicide in the middle of the fight, making Seong Gi-hun, the main protagonist of the series, the rightful winner of both the game and the reward money.

The last seconds of the series left the big unknown for season 2 of ‘Squid Game’, as Seong Gi-hun can be seen returning to real life with the money in his possession, leaving a memorable image because he has red hair!

Why does Seong Gi-hun dye his hair red?

It’s convenient to clarify that there is still no official explanation for this, so we’ll find out soon when we watch season 2 of ‘Squid Game.’ However, there are some interesting theories about Seong Gi-hun’s hair color change, as he decided to dye his hair red at the end of season 1.

  • He is a different person now - A very plausible theory is that Gi-hun has become a completely different person than he was before participating in this macabre game. He no longer allows anyone to control his life or make decisions for him, and envisions a different future in which his personality is much stronger.
  • A Tribute to the Fallen - Gi-hun has seen several comrades - and friends - die during the course of the game, so it wouldn’t be surprising if dying his hair red, the color of blood, is his way of paying a well-deserved tribute to the fallen in this strange and capricious battlefield.
  • Guilt - Rather than a tribute, another theory suggests that it is a way of martyring himself; a way of symbolizing the trail of death he himself has left in some of those trials where saving himself was only possible by condemning someone else to death.
  • From Hero to Villain - The last and perhaps most interesting point is that after being a participant - and a victim - Gi-hun will exchange the green suit for a red one in ‘Squid Game 2′. This means that he will become one of the villains in the second season.

Tomorrow, Thursday, December 26, we will find out for sure.
