Bethesda

Starfield’s references to Skyrim, Oblivion, and even Lord of the Rings

Despite being set in space, Bethesda’s new title does not forget its predecessors and even makes references to Tolkien’s work.

Update:
Starfield

Starfield is still a work of Bethesda, and within the game you can find references to previous The Elder Scrolls titles of the studio such as Skyrim and Oblivion, showing their respect for what came before.

References to Skyrim and Oblivion in Starfield

Skyrim became famous for multiple reasons, but for a while, it was to the great quote “I Used To Be An Adventurer Like You, Then I Took An Arrow In The Knee.” And of course, this is the first reference in Starfield. One of the skills that our character can learn is Crippling, with which any shot at certain points can incapacitate opponents, and of course, its icon is an arrow through a knee. This is not the only reference, as some NPCs will also give you a spatial version of this famous phrase:

With Oblivion, it’s a much more obvious reference, as we were introduced to them in one of the first trailers for the game. When we were shown the return of Adoring Fan, a character that appeared when you chose the Hero Worshipped trait. This character crossed space and time to become another of the companions you can unlock in the game.

And the Lord of the Rings Easter egg

The millions of fans of The Lord of the Rings will be happy to get their hands on a potato in Stafield, because this tuber refers to the second novel (and movie) of the trilogy, The Two Towers, which features Sam Gamyi, the sympathetic friend and companion of Frodo Baggins.

In Tolkien’s original story, Sam defends this popular tuber in the face of Gollum’s hostility to even tasting it. “Can be prepared in many ways. Boiled, mashed, used in a stew.... The recipes are nearly limitless,” Sam tells Gollum, or in this case... the in-game description in Starfield.
