Sunfyre, Aegon’s dragon, plays a different role in the novel

Sunfyre, Aegon’s dragon, plays a different role in the novel.

Update:

In the second season of ‘House of the Dragon,’ a headstrong Aegon II Targaryen climbs onto Sunfyre’s back, ready to join the battle ahead. Because of his recklessness, the king is struck down by Aemond, and his dragon crashes to the ground, apparently badly injured. The last time we saw him on screen, he was still breathing, but it was already hinted that the dragon had succumbed to his injuries.

In the third episode of the new season, Daemon Targaryen claims that his daughter Baela has seen Sunfyre’s corpse rotting, which definitively confirms that the dragon is dead, even though the body has never been seen. This differs from George R. R. Martin’s novel.

Rhaenyra’s Fate in the Novel

In the book, Sunfyre suffers serious injuries after his defeat at the Battle of Rook’s Rest, but manages to survive by the skin of his teeth. He never fully recovers, though he plays a role in the story’s conclusion.

At the end of the war, the conflict among the Targaryens claims thousands of lives. One of them is Rhaenyra Targaryen herself, who dies in the most violent way possible: Sunfyre, Aegon’s dragon, devours her limb by limb until she dies, all while her son witnesses the murder. The queen dies at Dragonstone after a bloody war. Aegon III Targaryen, Rhaenyra’s son, is crowned king. At what cost?
