The ‘House of the Dragon’ change that puts a Targaryen on a dragon that isn’t hers

Sheepstealer’s rider differs from the one in George R. R. Martin’s novel.

Rhaena Targaryen

Rhaena Targaryen, daughter of Prince Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon, was unable to claim the dragon she longed for, which caused her some frustration. In the HBO series ‘House of the Dragon’, Rhaena’s storyline differs from that in ‘Fire & Blood’, the novel by George R. R. Martin.

At the end of Season Two, Rhaena Targaryen tracks down the dragon Sheepstealer, a wild reptile with an infamous reputation for hunting in the area. In the series, the princess approaches it and tries to claim it, though her initial attempts are unsuccessful. However, the dragon never attacks her.

In subsequent encounters, she sings a song to it in High Valyrian. The beast takes flight and returns with several sheep. To Rhaena’s surprise, the dragon wants to share the food with her. The princess doesn’t hesitate and devours chunks of mutton. She then climbs onto the beast’s back.

Rhaena is Nettles in ‘House of the Dragon’

Rhaena Targaryen has taken on the backstory of Nettles, a character who appears in ‘Blood and Fire’ and who fought in the Dance of the Dragons on the back of Sheepstealer. However, in the series, it is Rhaena who charges into battle, even though the dragon obeys her. There, she witnesses the tragic fate of Jacaerys Velaryon, son of Queen Rhaenyra.
