Super Mario RPG co-director not involved in remake, but “pleased” about it

Chihiro Fujioka, one of the original directors of Super Mario RPG, says he is fully in favor of the remake of his game.

One of the biggest surprises of the last Nintendo Direct was the announcement of the remake of Super Mario RPG, one of the great Super Nintendo classics, in one of those very special collaborations with Square. One of the directors of the original, Chihiro Fujioka, has confirmed that he is not involved in the project, although he has assured that, as a fan, he is very much on board.

“I am not involved in the remake,” Fujioka said on Twitter, in response to a fan who asked him directly about the matter. “But I am very surprised and pleased with the news!”

“Thanks for your message! I too am very happy and looking forward to November!,” Fujioka replied to another fan on Twitter (via Reddit). The Japanese creative himself said some time ago that he would like to end his career as a developer with a final installment of the saga, although it is clear that it will not be this remake. Who will return is the composer Yoko Shimomura, who composed the original soundtrack of the game at its launch in 1996.

A new opportunity to enjoy a classic SNES game

“Team up with an oddball group of heroes to save Star Road and stop the troublemaking Smithy Gang. This colorful RPG has updated graphics and cinematics that add even more charm to the unexpected alliance between Mario, Bowser, Peach, and original characters Mallow and Geno,” reads Nintendo’s official description of the game. “Enter (or revisit) this world of eccentric allies and offbeat enemies in an RPG for everyone.”

In fact, the full name of the game was Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, and in addition to the aforementioned Fujioka and Shimomura, other legends of Japanese development such as Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yoshihiko Maekawa, and Kensuke Tanabe were involved.

The Super Mario RPG remake is coming to Nintendo Switch on November 17th.
