Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow changes its title, and James Gunn has a good reason for it

The movie starring Milly Alcock will now have a simpler name.

Update:

James Gunn, head of DC Studios, has revealed that ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will change its name, and it will have a simpler title. Now the film starring Milly Alcock will simply be called ‘Supergirl,’ and this comes thanks to a detail that Gunn “feels sick about” in superhero movies, in that they all seem to share the same naming structure.

This was revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone, where the director explained his decision. He mentions that there is something he calls “premortem,” which are all these discussions and decisions that happen months before filming, and all these questions or comments are made related to the project that can help avoid problems once the film starts shooting.

Among the issues that came up was the title of the Superman movie, formerly known as Superman: Legacy. “Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure,” said Gunn. “First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing. And then also it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward, even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it.’”

Supergirl, the next film in the DC Universe

A few months after the release of Superman, the next movie Warner Bros. is preparing is Supergirl. It will star Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze.

The film is inspired by a comic book miniseries published between 2021 and 2022, created by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, in which Supergirl contemplates her existence until an alien girl asks for her help on a mission of revenge.

Supergirl will be released in United States theaters on June 26, 2026.
