Sylvester Stallone admits Arnold Schwarzenegger was the better action hero

Sylvester Stallone, the man behind legendary characters like Rocky and Rambo, has admitted that he’s beaten in his action movie rivalry with Schwarzenegger.

These last few weeks, Arnold Schwarzenegger is giving a lot to talk about, either because of the premiere of his new series, FUBAR, on Netflix or for his own documentary film, a kind of biopic in which the ex-governor of California is honest about many aspects of his personal and professional life. Although perhaps one of the biggest surprises is an appearance by Sylvester Stallone, the actor who gave life to Rocky and Rambo for so many years in the cinema and one of Schwarzenegger’s greatest rivals in the Hollywood action genre. And he did so to admit that Arnold “was superior” as an action hero.

Stallone himself admitted that First Blood, the first installment of the Rambo franchise, was a turning point in action cinema, since “You actually relied upon your body to tell the story. Dialogue was not necessary. I saw that there was an opportunity, ‘cause no one else was doing this… except some other guy from Austria, who doesn’t need to say much.” referring to the then rising Schwarzenegger.

It was from this point that the rivalry between the two actors grew until it became almost popular culture: Arnold Schwarzenegger vs Sylvester Stallone; Rambo vs Terminator. Still, and after several decades of two of Hollywood’s most prolific careers as action kings, Stallone admits that Schwarzenegger was better than him as an action hero mainly because his physical presence on screen was not up to Arnold’s:

“He was superior. He just had all the answers. He had the body. He had the strength. That was his character. I had to get my ass kicked constantly, whereas Arnold, he never got hurt much. And I’m going, ‘Arnold, you could go out and fight a dragon and you’d come back with a Band-Aid.,” Stallone admits of his professional colleague. Of course, Schwarzenegger also dedicated a few words to Stallone:

“without Stallone, I maybe wouldn’t have been as motivated in the ‘80s to do the kind of movies that I did and to work as hard as I did. I’m a competitive person.” he concluded. Even so, and leaving behind the rivalry of bygone times, both have worked together in several films, being Escape Plan the one they share the most screen time.
