Tears of the Kingdom review scores: Which is the highest rated Zelda in history?

Take a look at every review available right now for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and find out if Nintendo was able to create a worthy successor or not.

Update:
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

A waterfall of perfect tens is not easy to forget, like what happened with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Not content with having released one of the best games ever, Nintendo has done it again. International critics are now raving about the sequel to that one. Tears of the Kingdom, described in the MeriStation review as “the most ambitious game in Nintendo history”, laughs at those who considered it an expansion or a DLC. It is a must. A masterpiece of this industry that will mark a before and after.

The media around the world are full of praise about how the sequel fixes all the weaknesses of the first one: dungeons, the amount of story and plot, side quests,a stronger soundtrack... But not content with it, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom also revolutionizes its playable proposal with dozens of novelties and mechanics never seen before. Everyone seems to agree that we are facing the pinnacle of the Nintendo Switch and facing one of those games that will always be remembered. The wait (6 long years) has been worth it.

The Legend of Zelda games with the best score on Metacritic

Until now, the ranking of The Legend of Zelda games on Metacritic was as follows:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time — Score: 99
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild — Score: 97
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker — Score: 96
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess — Score: 96
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask — Score: 95
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past — Score: 95

It does not seem like things are going to change, largely because that 99 that Ocarina of Time has is based on only 22 reviews. Reviews after the fact are not allowed and at that time, in addition to there being less outlets, there was also less desire to give a grade with a discordant punctuation that would attract attention and encourage reading the explanation.

All in all, it looks like Tears of the Kingdom is going to rub shoulders for runner-up with Breath of the Wild, both in second place with 97, and even reaching for a 98 that hasn’t been seen in this industry since Grand Theft Auto IV in 2008. To put it in context, Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok, the two GOTY titles from last year, had a 96 and 94 respectively.
