GamesIndustry’s annual infographic reveals how the video game market will fare in 2023, with sales and other industry details.
The year is coming to an end and beyond the traditional lists of best games by category or our favorite games, it is always good to see the hard data on how the gaming industry behaved.
As has become a tradition, GamesIndustry presented its annual infographic where it visually reports data from various market data companies to give us a snapshot of how the market, media, and consumers moved in the face of releases, companies, and trailers, among other details.
The video game market in 2023
One of the first details to highlight is how games are sold. For several years, the digital format has been positioned as the biggest winner, each year gaining ground against the physical format. According to the sales data, the physical format sales decreased by 3.8% compared to the previous year, despite a profit of 9.5 billion dollars. Meanwhile, digital sales generated revenues of $174.5 billion.
Meanwhile, game sales between the U.S., U.K., and Japan had very clear winners. In the United States, Hogwarts Legacy was the big winner of the year, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The top 10 also includes other unsurprising games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Madden NFL 24, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2:
Most viewed video game trailers
Finally, when it comes to trailers, it should come as no surprise that Grand Theft Auto 6 has become the most-watched video game trailer of the year, beating out the next three trailers combined.
While the reveal trailer for Rockstar Games’ upcoming adventure garnered 101.6 million views, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3′s gameplay reveal, League of Legends’ Heartsteel music video, and Honkai Star Rail’s Bailu trailer garnered 38.5 million, 31.1 million, and 23.3 million views, respectively.
