Update:
The Brendan Fraser version of ‘The Mummy’ is going back to the big screen after 25 years

It’s been 25 years since Universal’s ‘The Mummy’ first released in theaters back in 1999. Immediately a huge success, the movie became a beloved part of many fans, with some crowning it as the peak of the adventure genre in film. Now, those same fans will be able to enjoy the movie on the big screen once more.

According to a report by comingsoon.net, ‘The Mummy is set to return to theaters around the United States this very month due to the 25th anniversary of the film landing on April 26. The epic remake of the horror classic of the same name from 1932, this version of the movie was a massive success by raking it $416 million dollars at the global box office. The movie gave way to multiple sequels and spinoffs, as well as a long-running animated series.

Set in 1926, The Mummy follows a group of adventurers that accidentally awaken Imhotep, the mummified high priest of Egypt who was cursed to his fate for crimes commited against the pharao. Now with supernatural powers, the titular Mummy begins killing the people who awakaned him to regenerate and grow in power, while the main heroes must race to defeat him or face the end of the world.

Written and directed by Stephen Sommers, the film stars Brendan Fraser as the dashing Rick O’Conell, Rachel Weisz as the bookish Evelyn Carnahan, John Hannah as her brother Jonathan, and Arnold Vosloo as Imhotep himself. The cast was so charismatic that their characters quickly became symbols of pop culture, still being regarded as the superior version of the film, even over the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise.

The Mummy will return to theaters on April 26, 2024. Curiously, it’ll share the billboard with a re-release of the original Alien, as well as Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which is also re-releasing due to its 25th anniversary.
