The canceled Star Wars Battlefront 3 was almost finished: It was “legit incredible, Gamers don’t know what they were robbed of”

Michael Barclay, now chief designer at Naughty Dog, defines what happened to the video game as “robbed” to gamers.

Update:
Star Wars Battlefront 3

The two classic installments of Star Wars: Battlefront are still very popular in the gaming community. However, there is a void in the saga left by a third installment that never saw the light of day. It fought between light and darkness, but the dark side was stronger this time: Lucas Arts decided to cancel it at the last minute. As revealed by Michael Barclay, former Free Radical developer and current lead designer at Naughty Dog, the project was on the verge of completion when the lightsaber was thrust into it and his life was cut short.

Not only did Barclay point out that the project was “going to be legit incredible ,” but he also believes that the players were robbed:

“I feel like it’s been long enough now to come out and say Star Wars Battlefront III was gonnae  [sic] be legit incredible and the fact it got cancelled 2 yards from the finish line is an absolute crime. Gamers don’t know what they were robbed of.”

The game was “99% complete”

As published by IGN, Free Radical co-founder Steve Ellis said something similar in 2012. The creative stated that the development of Star Wars Battlefront 3 was 99% done. Later, another employee criticized the studio, estimating that it was “at 75%” and that it was a mediocre title: “This 99 percent complete stuff is just bullsh*t,” he told Gamespot. “A generous estimate would be 75 percent of a mediocre game.”

Ellis then issued a statement calling these comments “false.” He pointed to the leaked material to support his argument. In addition, he stressed that Lucas Arts was suffering from many internal problems at the time, which led to its final closure after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm.

The two modern installments of Star Wars Battlefront have nothing to do with the classic ones. The current ones are developed by DICE under the umbrella of Electronic Arts. At the moment, it is unknown whether the Battlefield studio will begin development of a third installment of the franchise.

The next title in the galactic saga is Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which will be released on April 28th for PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PC.
