The creator of My Hero Academia reveals what led him to create the series: “I would have no regret”

The creator of the hit series shares the reasons and challenges that led him to create this iconic world.

Although My Hero Academia has ended in the manga series, its legacy continues. The inspirational story of a world full of superheroes has left a mark on the Shonen genre (and in a way, the story continues in the anime). But what inspired its mangaka, Kohei Horikoshi, to create this world? The author himself has revealed the answer.

The inspiration behind My Hero Academia

In the recently released book, My Hero Academia Ultra Age, the third and final fanbook of the series, focused on revealing information about characters, skills and even information about the author, it is revealed to fans what the inspiration behind the series Horikoshi worked on for nearly a decade.

In this book, in a Q&A section, Horikoshi is asked, “What made you start writing My Hero Academia and what was your inspiration?” To that, the author replied: “[After previous failures], I took this opportunity as a final challenge in Shonen Jump. So I decided to pour my all into drawing this series with the mindset that I would have no regrets, allowing me to do whatever I liked and draw whatever I liked as well.”

The author has previously spoken of the trials and tribulations he experienced prior to achieving success with My Hero Academia. At the time, he mentioned that “I drew My Hero Academia thinking that if this didn’t work out, I would quit drawing manga. That is why I have drawn My Hero Academia with the intention of making it a story, which will encourage people who had mistakes in the past or had their hearts broken will want to try again.”

‘My Hero Academia’ and its global success

A success with audiences and sales alike, ‘My Hero Academia’ ended its manga story in August last year. “I will never forget the joy and weight of battling other mangaka in the widely admired Jump magazine, mangaka who each have awesome stories of their own,” its author wrote at the time. Despite the story’s conclusion on paper, its universe is still going strong, with one more season of the anime yet to finish the story, and recently, the premiere of the spinoff. My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.
