The Last of Us

The detail in ‘The Last of Us’ trailer that could mean the change of a key scene in the series

Fans suspect a significant change between Ellie and Abby at a crucial moment in their story.

The Last of Us

Recently we were able to enjoy a spectacular new trailer for the second season of ‘The Last of Us’, the celebrated HBO adaptation series based on Naughty Dog’s famous PlayStation video game. A new trailer of the most revealing that also served to confirm the premiere date of its new episodes, in a few weeks. Although by the looks of it, this new trailer has raised the suspicions of many fans of the original work who believe that the series will present us with a significant change in a crucial moment between Ellie and Abby with respect to the videogame. Spoiler alert: the next paragraphs contain story details from The Last of Us: Part 2.

Switch between Ellie and Abby in the series?

‘The Last of Us’, a post-apocalyptic series starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. They did a great job with its first season in adapting both characters' poignant story while masterfully expanding their world. However, the second season aims to adapt a story, that of the videogame sequel, much darker and grittier, with a five-year chronological leap in between.

In this sense, the creators of the series, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, have already confirmed that they would include some significant changes with respect to the original story despite maintaining many of its plots and characters, although its chronology will not be exactly the same. So much so, that after seeing the trailer, many fans seem to have discovered what the creators meant by this type of chronological changes.

If we look and go back to the video game, at a certain point in the story Abby wakes up among a group of Seraphites after being captured and tied to a tree. They are about to kill her as part of a ritual in the name of their prophet. They then hang her by her neck over a bucket to prevent her from suffocating as they prepare to disembowel her. However, it seems that in the recent trailer for the second season of ‘The Last of Us’ it is Ellie who stars in this scene instead of Abby.

So much so, that many fans claim that in the trailer you can see the silhouette of Ellie surrounded by members of a cult while she is tied with a rope: “Yes, it seems that Ellie was captured. I imagine the arrow-in-the-shoulder scene in the game didn’t work so well in live action, so they created a different, but equally traumatic first encounter with the Seraphites for the series,” commented one fan in a Reddit thread on this topic.

Another commented, “Gee, it looks like it - how’s he going to get out of there?”. Others commented that Jesse could save Ellie, or even Dina, but in the game, Lev and Yara come to Abby’s rescue, and that’s how they forge their unlikely relationship, which would mean another big narrative shift for those characters. We’ll have to wait for the premiere of the second season of ‘The Last of Us’ on April 14 to confirm whether the series has opted for this kind of change from the video game.
