The director of ‘Squid Game’ created the series to question democracy: “Is the majority always right?”

Hwang Dong-hyuk explains the idea behind the series on the eve of Season 2.

‘Squid Game’ returns on December 26 with a second season that will not leave anyone indifferent. The series was one of the great sensations of Netflix in 2021, and in these years it has gained a popularity that goes beyond the format in which it was born. But it all starts with an idea, a seed that gradually sprouts to give shape to the final product. For Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creation of the series began with the desire to pose a question to the democratic system.

Thus was born ‘Squid Game,’ the second season of which is premiering on Netflix.

“We live in a democratic society, and everyone has their own right to vote, but the dominant side rules,” the director explains in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “So I also wanted to pose the question: Is the majority always right?”

Hwang draws on visible elements within society. “I was inspired by the sheer fact that everywhere you turn, people are drawing lines, whether it’s by generation, class, religion, ethnicity or race. I wanted to tell a story about how the different choices we make create conflicts among us and to open up a conversation about whether there is a way to move toward a direction where we can overcome these divisions.”

In fact, the second season of the series goes even further in this regard. At the end of each round, the contestants must vote to end the game. The players are divided into two groups. The first is a group of people who share their concern for the economy and believe they have the ability to prevail against the rest. The second, on the other hand, believes that a single vote from the opposition will lead to their destruction. Curious, to say the least.
