Marvel Studios

The Fantastic Four: First Steps receives its first ratings, and everything indicates that the adaptation has finally redeemed itself

Could it be that Marvel Studios has finally hit the nail on the head with the First Family?

Update:

The summer of blockbusters and superheroes continues. The MCU is reeling, and its next bet is on one of its most important superhero groups, but one that has never quite made it to the big screen. The Fantastic Four: First Steps premieres on July 25, and the first reviews have begun to appear, greatly favoring Marvel Studios’ latest offering.

What are the reviews saying about The Fantastic Four: First Steps?

The new film inspired by the Fantastic Four has an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a total of 111 reviews at the time of writing. Matt Zoller Cetis of RogerEbert.com writes: “This is a solid, intelligent, occasionally inspired comic book movie that delivers most of what a popular audience demands from the genre plus a little bit more,” while Caralynn Matassa of CBR mentions that “First Steps is easily the best MCU film in years, grounded by compelling performances, solid action, and next-level visuals.” David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter comments that “Rather than allowing the action to define the story, the filmmakers let the poignant character-based scenes do the heavy lifting. That should not imply any lack of excitement,” and Brian Truitt of USA Today comments, “It’s a ‘Fantastic Four’ movie that finally gets its heroes right, after so many tries.”

That said, not everything has been positive with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. David Ehrlich of IndieWire comments that “It feels less like a victory than it does a total surrender. You have to walk before you can run, but at this point the MCU is back to crawling on its knees.“ Meanwhile, Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post wrote: ”First Steps marks a slight improvement from the preceding trilogy of terror. But Marvel still can’t nail what should be one of its premiere attractions."

How does The Fantastic Four: First Steps compares to the other Fantastic Four movies?

Well, the Fantastic Four’s history in cinema hasn’t been entirely positive. And while the bar wasn’t set particularly high, the First Family didn’t have many successes either. Similarly, using the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, these are the ratings that all the Fantastic Four movies have received:

  1. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) - 86%
  2. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) - 37%
  3. The Fantastic Four (1994) - 33%
  4. Fantastic Four (2005) - 27%
  5. Fantastic Four (2015) - 9%
