‘The Last of Us’ season 2 finale explained: What will happen to Ellie and Abby?

Recap of ‘The Last of Us’ season 2 finale, and what to expect from the series in future seasons.

Update:

Season 2 of ‘The Last of Us’ officially came to an end on Sunday, May 25, with the premiere of its final episode. Full of plot twists and emotional ups and downs, the episode culminated in the inevitable meeting between Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). What will happen next?

Author’s note: this article contains spoilers for both the second season of ‘The Last of Us’ series and the video game The Last of Us Part II. Be warned!

How does season 2 of ‘The Last of Us’ end?

The second season of ‘The Last of Us’ tells the story of Ellie and Dina’s journey of revenge, in search of Abby, who murdered Joel in the second episode. Both arrive in Seattle, a real war zone in which those infected by the Cordyceps fungus are not the only danger to avoid: the members of the Washington Liberation Front -also known as “Wolves”- and the Scars are two factions fighting each other for control of the area.

In the seventh and final episode of season 2, titled ‘Convergence‘, Abby finds Ellie, Dina, Jesse and Tommy’s hideout, and kills the latter while threatening Tommy and Ellie. After a tense moment, Abby shoots, and there is a fade to black. The action then flashes back to three days ago, with Abby waking up in the Wolves’ base in a stadium.

This ending, while it may be somewhat disconcerting to those who have only seen the series, will be familiar to those who have played The Last of Us Part II. As the chapter’s name implies, it is a convergence: the plot point at which Ellie and Abby’s paths cross again. The video game is structured in such a way that, about halfway through the game, we switch from controlling Ellie to handling Abby, which allows us to learn her point of view and motivations, although it is true that they were revealed much earlier in the series than in the game.

What will happen in season 3 of ‘The Last of Us’?

It is already known that the third season, already confirmed, will focus exclusively on Abby’s point of view, whose presence has been anecdotal during the second season because it focused on Ellie’s mission in Seattle. In other words, the new episodes will show what happens to Abby and the Wolves during the three days between Ellie’s arrival in Seattle and their meeting. When the new episodes are available -there is no premiere date yet-, it will be interesting to watch again those of the second season to better understand how both stories that run in parallel fit together.

Craig Mazin, one of the series’ co-creators, directors, and screenwriters, dropped hints about a potential fourth season because he believes they won’t be able to satisfactorily conclude the plot during the third season. In other words: while season 3 would correspond to Abby’s arc, it is possible that the fourth season would be reserved exclusively for the denouement of the plot, as well as the epilogue of the game.
