The leaked trailer for the ‘Powerpuff Girls’ series makes it hard to understand why it was canceled

The pilot episode did not get the green light from the then-head of The CW.

It has been five years since the American channel The CW announced the live-action adaptation of the popular animated series ‘Powerpuff Girls’, something that naturally raised the eyebrows of many of its fans, especially considering that its interpreters would be three actresses who had already passed adolescence a few years ago. Well, in fact, its three protagonists are already in their thirties, or even in their thirties? We are talking about Chloe Bennet (‘Agents of SHIELD’, 32 years old), singer Dove Cameron (29 years old) and Yana Perrault (29 years old), while Donald Faison (‘Scrubbs’) would be Professor Utonium. Unfortunately, the show was canceled.

And yes, we say unfortunately, because when we saw the trailer that was leaked, what can we say, it didn’t look that bad either. It didn’t look like a show aimed at children, and it at least looked fun, something that Mark Pedowitz, then CEO of The CW, didn’t think so, and after seeing the pilot episode, he decided not to greenlight the show, calling it “a disaster.”

Why was ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ canceled?

Well, it seems it was because of its tone and the age of its protagonists, something its creator felt was a mistake. “I had one meeting with them (the CW), and I told them, ‘When you turn them into adults, they’re no longer the ‘Powerpuff Girls’ because if they’re adults, that’s just three super girls who don’t have to deal with being kids.’ That’s a completely different show,” Craig McCracken said in 2023.

“The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting,” reads the official synopsis. Now that we’ll never get to see it, we can at least get an idea with this fun trailer.
