The Legend of Zelda live-action movie is now “in production”, begins filming in New Zealand
Filming is now underway for Nintendo’s live-action adaptation, set to bring Hyrule to life like never before.
The long-anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda franchise has officially moved into production, with principal photography now underway in New Zealand. A listing updated this week by the Film & Television Industry Alliance (FTIA) confirms the project’s “in production” status, with filming based in Wellington and expected to continue until April 2026.
The Legend of Zelda Movie: Everything We Know So Far
While details of the project remain under wraps, some important aspects have been revealed. Earlier this year, it was revealed that young actors Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Zelda and Link. Also, a plot outline for the movie was revealed:
“The Legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce — an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”
The production boasts a heavyweight creative team to bring this vision to the screen. Legendary Nintendo creative boss and franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto is producing the film alongside Avi Arad, the former CEO of Marvel Studios. The director is Wes Ball, known for his work on the ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Maze Runner’ franchises, and the screenplay is being handled by Derek Connolly, who previously wrote for ‘Jurassic World.’ Ball has previously expressed his desire for the film to feel “grounded” and “real,” a philosophy that the vast, natural landscapes of New Zealand are perfectly suited to achieve.
The Legend of Zelda is currently set to launch on May 7, 2027.
