Star Wars

‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ is the cheapest ‘Star Wars’ movie of the Disney era

The film starring Din Djarin and little Baby Yoda will hit theaters in May 2026.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian

Technology from Industrial Light & Magic, one of Lucasfilm’s companies, has allowed the budget for ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu’ to be tighter than usual. This is Stagecraft, a recording system that debuted on ‘The Mandalorian’ series and has been used on ‘The Book of Boba Fett’, ‘Ahsoka’, ‘Skeleton Crew’ and ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, as well as other productions such as ‘House of the Dragon’. Tax breaks offered by the state of California have also served to drive down the cost of the new film, which will be the cheapest of all the ‘Star Wars’ films in the Disney era.

When comparing the budget of a film with a past production, factors such as inflation must be taken into account, otherwise a distortion of reality may occur. In any case, this is the static photograph showing the budget of the feature films of the saga at the time they were made.

The budget of the ‘Star Wars’ movies

  • ‘Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope’: $11 million.
  • ‘Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back’: $18 million.
  • ‘Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi’: $32.5 million.
  • ‘Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace’: $115 million.
  • ‘Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones’: $115 million.
  • ‘Star Wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith’: $113 million.
  • ‘Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens’: $245 million.
  • ‘Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi’: $317 million.
  • ‘Star Wars Episode IX Rise of Skywalker’: $275 million.
  • ‘Rogue One’: $200 million.
  • ‘Han Solo’: $275 million.
  • ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’: $166.4 million.
