The most anticipated movies of 2024
Dune: Part Two
The sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed reimagining of a sci-fi classic arrives this year with the promise of taking everything seen in ‘Dune’ to new heights of epic and spectacle, not forgetting its careful narrative framed within the best of science fiction. With an all-star cast headed by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, we will have the opportunity to enjoy other names such as Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista and Javier Bardem, among others. The film is scheduled for release on March 1.
‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’
A new installment of the ‘Mad Max’ saga arrives in 2024 from the hands of George Miller with ‘Furiosa’, a prequel to the last ‘Mad Max: Road Rage’ that this time tells us the origins of the famous Imperator Furiosa, played this time by Anya Taylor-Joy. A story that will offer a deeper look into the past of the iconic road warrior, who will have to face Chris Hemsworth in the role of Warlord Dementus. In theaters May 24.
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’
After a year of impasse for DC and superheroes in the movies, comes the unexpected sequel to one of the most celebrated comic book movies of all time. Reuniting with Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his role as the Clown Prince of Crime in the first Joker, this new DC Elseworlds installment also has filmmaker Todd Phillips behind the cameras, this time with Lady Gaga co-starring as Harley Quinn. The new story is set in a Gotham that has succumbed to crime, but with a very distinct personality that flirts with the musical genre. It will be released this fall.
‘Deadpool 3′
The superhero genre continues with the return of Marvel’s Mouthy Mercenary, this time as part of the MCU. And thanks to the opening of the multiverse, Marvel Studios opens the doors to recently acquired characters who become part of their own reality, this time with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, both from Fox’s mutant universe. A movie that is sure to take the box office by storm and promises crazy cameos in what looks like an adaptation of ‘Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe’, although this time it seems to be Fox’s. It is scheduled for release on July 26.
‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’
The Planet of the Apes franchise gets a new installment this year that takes Caesar’s last saga and moves it several generations into the future, where apes rule the Earth and humans survive in the shadows, persecuted by the new dominant factions. As a new tyrannical leader builds his new empire, a young ape begins a journey that will lead him to question his past and that of his people, and to make decisions that will affect the future of both apes and humans. May 24 in theaters.
‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’
We continue with new ape adventures, but this time with the fearsome and colossal titans of the MonsterVerse, the shared universe of Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures starring King Kong and Godzilla. In this new installment, the two monsters must join forces after facing off in the previous movie, this time to face new threats from within our world. A movie that promises spectacular visuals and destruction everywhere in what promises to be the definitive crossover of such iconic characters. The film is scheduled for release on March 29.
‘Alien: Romulus’
After several years and failed attempts to revitalize the ‘Alien’ brand - with a couple of forgettable prequels - the mythical Fox saga - now under the Disney umbrella - resumes its more classic personality with the new proposal directed by Fede Álvarez, a filmmaker with plenty of experience in horror. And he does it with a new canon film that takes place between the first two films, that is ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’. Little else is known about this new incursion into one of cinema’s most mythical space horror universes - and which also has the approval of Ridley Scott - although we do know its release date: August 16.
‘Gladiator 2′
We close our selection of the most anticipated films of 2024 with another unexpected sequel. That’s how we could define Ridley Scott’s next film, a blockbuster that will continue the events of the first part and that, inevitably, will not star Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius. Instead, the lead role will go to Paul Mescal as Lucius; little else is known about the synopsis, other than that the action will take place 25 years after the events of the first film. The cast also includes Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen and Barry Keoghan, among others. The movie is scheduled to be released at November 22.
Other films of interest in 2024
The most anticipated series of 2024
‘Avatar: The Legend of Aang’
After the great success of ‘One Piece’, Netflix is back with another live-action based on an animated series. Thus, and to make us forget the weak adaptation of ‘The Last Airbender’ by M. Night Shyamalan, this new live-action series aims to be everything that the 2010 film was not, with great respect for the original material and the current good work of the streaming platform in this type of adaptations. The story takes us to a fantasy world at war and Asian inspiration, where some people can master one of the four elements; young Aang is the only one who can master water, earth, air, and fire, so he is destined to bring peace to a land ravaged by death and destruction.
‘The Boys 4′
After a brutal spin-off like ‘Gen-V’, the universe of ‘The Boys’ continues with its long-awaited fourth season, with a Patriot increasingly immersed in madness and a Butcher willing to do anything to end the hegemony of the Supers. The series has its usual cast for this new batch of episodes, with the addition of Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan in ‘The Walking Dead’) as the big attraction. More violence, more brutality, more superheroes, antiheroes and villains, a new socio-political reality... The fourth season of ‘The Boys’ promises all this and more when it premieres sometime in 2024, probably in the summer or fall via Prime Video.
‘House of the Dragon′
Easily one of the most anticipated shows of the year, the first season of the Game of Thrones spin-off dazzled both fans of the HBO fiction and newcomers to its medieval fantasy universe with a prequel plot based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, which tells the story of the rise and fall of the Targaryen dynasty. This second season promises to be even more spectacular thanks to the adaptation of the arc known as the Dance of the Dragons, with the ruthless start of the civil war that would effectively end the Targaryen line. The new episodes are expected to arrive on HBO Max this coming summer.
‘The Penguin’
The universe of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as Batman, continues to expand in anticipation of its sequel, scheduled for release in 2025. And it does so with a series that focuses on the character of the new mob boss in Gotham City after the events of the first film: Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin, played again by an unrecognizable Colin Farrell. This new limited series will bridge the gap between Matt Reeves’ two Dark Knight films, focusing on the Penguin’s cunning and intrigue with a fully rebuilt Gotham at his feet. The series does not yet have a premiere date, though it should arrive on Max in the second half of the year.
‘Echo’
Marvel Studios is not without its corresponding dose of series on Disney+ this year, with a clear and unexpected protagonist: ‘Echo’. And this spin-off series of ‘Hawkeye’ debuts the more adult label Marvel Spotlight to bring to the screen a dark story of violence and revenge with the appearance of characters from Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ universe such as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin or Charlie Cox’s own Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, now part of the MCU, with Maya Lopez’s character in the middle of the equation. Nobody gave a dime for this series, although with the premiere of its first and violent trailer, all eyes were on its upcoming premiere date on Disney+: January 9, with its five chapters available from day one.
‘True Detective: Night Country’
The new season of Nic Pizzolato’s acclaimed crime anthology ‘True Detective’ has finally arrived, this time starring Oscar-winning actress Jodie Foster and the inexperienced but promising Kali Reis. Together, in their respective roles as detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, they must investigate the mysterious disappearance of six men working at the Arctic research station Tsalal. They will soon discover the disturbing truths hidden in the ancient ice that sustains the icy world of this new season, premiering January 15 on HBO Max.
‘Fallout’
A new adaptation of a video game arrives in television format, just as HBO Max did last year with ‘The Last of Us’. And this time we are faced with another colossus of the medium, as is the Bethesda saga, which this year receives its own adaptation as a series with the promise of being as faithful as possible to the original material, both visually and in a plot that will take us to a dystopian world devastated by nuclear war, where the few human survivors live confined to shelters; until they venture into the dangerous wilderness? It is scheduled for release on Prime Video on April 12.
‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’
We conclude our selection of the most anticipated shows with The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which will be the conclusion of Rick and Michonne’s story after the end of The Walking Dead. With doubts about where their expected reunion will take us, many fans are waiting to see Andrew Lincoln back in action as Rick Grimes alongside Danai Gurira as Michonne. It is scheduled to premiere on February 25th on AMC and AMC+.
