Update:

The Mummy is back, and it won’t be with Tom Cruise or as part of Universal’s defunct Dark Universe. The now-classic 1999 film starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz appears to be making a comeback, with negotiations currently underway for a new sequel.

According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, this will be a sequel that will replace the third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, starring Fraser, Maria Bello (stepping in for Weisz), Jet Li, and Luke Ford as Rick and Evelyn’s son. The film will be directed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, responsible for films such as Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Scream 6. Sean Daniel, who produced the original movies with his late partner James Jacks, is back as producer.

The Enduring Appeal of the O’Connells

The original 1999 film, directed and co-written by Stephen Sommers, successfully remade the classic Universal Monsters concept by blending high-stakes action, comedy, romance, and a sense of classic adventure reminiscent of Indiana Jones. The chemistry between Fraser’s daring treasure hunter Rick O’Connell and Weisz’s brilliant Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell was central to the franchise’s global success, which grossed over $422.5 million for the first entry alone.

For now, details about this new installment remain under wraps, so it remains to be seen what new adventure Fraser and Weisz will embark on. On the other hand, as mentioned by The Hollywood Reporter, there has been no official response from Universal regarding this new installment, but we hope that the project will move forward a little further so that we can have more information about it.
