Update:

If we look back to March 2025, everyone was talking about ‘Adolescence,’ the acclaimed four-episode Netflix series inspired by a true crime. Now, a year later, on Thursday, June 4, ‘The Witness’ arrives on the platform—a new series that seems to share some similarities with it. Because aside from the sublime long take in Jack Thorne’s work, this new miniseries is also very short (only three episodes) and tells the story of a real-life murder.

Based on the murder of Rachel Nickell

‘The Witness’ follows a man named André who tries to protect his two-year-old son, who happens to be the sole eyewitness to the murder of his wife, Rachel Nickell. The police investigation, marred by a series of mistakes, weighs heavily on André, who simply wants to move on with his life alongside little Alex.

The story is based on a true event: Rachel Nickell was murdered at Wimbledon Common in London on July 15, 1992. She was walking with her two-year-old son when someone attacked her and stabbed her as many as 49 times, killing her instantly. The case caused a huge stir and led to a complex police investigation.

Although it’s tempting, it’s best not to look up information about the real case before watching ‘The Witness,’ as there’s a good chance that knowing the outcome of the investigation will spoil part of the experience.
