‘The Testaments,’ the new Hulu series that is actually the sequel to the hit ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ has just wrapped up its first season in spectacular fashion. So much so that with its final episode, the dystopian series based on the novel by award-winning author Margaret Atwood has become the number-one show in no fewer than 47 countries, with over 45 million hours watched. These undeniable numbers make it the television phenomenon of the moment and have already secured a second season, which is now in production. Fans of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ certainly have reason to celebrate.

‘The Testaments’: Its Finale Is Already No. 1 in 47 Countries

‘The Testaments’ takes place five years after the events of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ And while June Osborne continues to appear in the Hulu series, the plot actually centers on a new generation of young people who have grown up in Gilead, with two main protagonists: Agnes and Daisy. The former fervently believes in her role as the perfect wife within the ruling regime; the latter, however, arrives from Canada with very different goals.

“As a sequel to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘The Testaments’ is a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead. The series follows young teens Agnes, dutiful and pious, and Daisy, a new arrival and convert from beyond Gilead’s borders. As they navigate the gilded halls of Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory school for future wives, a place where obedience is instilled brutally and always with divine justification, their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present and their future,” say the show’s creators.

“It’s a stellar examination of the uniqueness of girlhood and how the patriarchy underestimates the power of female connection, often to its peril”
