Update:

No, ‘The Winds of Winter’ will not be published in the fall of 2026. The new novel in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series will not be ready by then, contrary to what a supposed leak suggested. The rumors have spread quickly, and the publisher, Bantam Books, has issued a statement denying the report:

“The online chatter you are seeing regarding a supposed leak is false,” a representative from the publishing house told Entertainment Weekly.

No release date in sight

The truth is that there is no sign that the publication of ‘The Winds of Winter’ is imminent—quite the opposite, in fact. George R. R. Martin, the author of the novels, said he could finish the book soon if he set aside certain things, but he doesn’t seem very eager to complete the work quickly: “It’s been made clear to me that Winds is the priority, but… I don’t know. Sometimes I’m not in the mood for that.”

In addition to the main ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series, Martin is also working on the second volume of ‘Fire & Blood,’ the book series that chronicles the history of the Targaryen dynasty beginning with Aegon I’s conquest. The author has also stated that he has more stories featuring the knight Dunk and his squire Egg, so it remains to be seen whether they will ever be published.

Despite having parted ways with ‘House of the Dragon’ showrunner Ryan Condal, George R. R. Martin remains involved in other HBO productions based on his work. The second season of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ is already underway, but there are more projects in the pipeline, including a series about Aegon and a movie.
