Pokémon
The reason why Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is trending again years after its release
Today, for 24 hours, you can be a Pokémon and join the party as players pay tribute to the saga. We will tell you everything you need to know.
Maybe you logged on to Twitter (...or should we call it X?) as part of your morning routine and saw that some friends or acquaintances have changed their avatar to a picture of some Pokémon. But what’s even more curious is that all of these artworks are similar, as if they’ve been in sync for a few days. That is because today is the international celebration of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Day.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Day origins
The history of this Internet phenomenon is fortunately documented and has its origins in Spain. It was in 2018, when a Spanish Twitter user named Deep Dope had the idea of wearing an avatar of one of the game’s Pokémon for 24 hours. Later, another user (RuinedBread2) suggested that he do it on August 2, a day like today, which is why we are celebrating. Over time, users from other countries have joined the party, using the hashtag #MysteryDungeon to join the others. The funny part of the phenomenon is that in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, the story is that one day you wake up and instead of being a human being, you are a talking Pokémon!

Want to join the party? Then there’s only one rule you need to know: make a Pokémon avatar right now and keep it up until tomorrow. Keep in mind that the standard size for Twitter avatars is 400 x 400 pixels. You can find a lot of this avatars at the PMD Sprite Repository site, where it has not only adapted the Pokémon that have appeared in the Mystery Dungeon saga, but has also taken the visual style to adapt the most recent characters (even those from Scarlet & Violet) to the sprite style.
The 2023 Pokémon World Championships are just around the corner
