The return of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ is real: Hulu prepares new series with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Chloé Zhao
The legendary 2000s series is getting a sequel, with a pilot directed by an Oscar winner.

The dream of many has finally come true. Deadline reported that Hulu is working on a new series of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ that will revive the Buffyverse created more than twenty years ago. Sarah Michelle Gellar will reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers, and to the surprise of many, Chloé Zhao, winner of the 2021 Best Director Oscar for ‘Nomadland’, will direct the pilot episode. As for the script, it will be written by sisters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (of ‘Poker Face’ fame).
The project is defined as a sequel to the original series, produced by 20th Television, Searchlight TV and several executives from the original series, including Dolly Parton herself. However, Buffyverse creator Joss Whedon is not involved in any way due to allegations of inappropriate behavior that peppered him in 2021. Sarah Michelle Gellar herself was one of the people who showed support for the affected co-stars, such as Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and its subsequent spin-off ‘Angel’.

While the return of other original cast members has not yet been confirmed, the project is expected to succeed with its first episode and eventually become a long-running series. Hulu plans to open a writers' room soon to develop new storylines. Gellar, who was previously reluctant to return, changed her mind, citing ‘Dexter’ and ‘Sex and the City’ as inspiration for exploring new ways to revive the Slayer’s story. The “revival” comes on the heels of a failed reboot attempt in 2018, which planned to introduce an African-American slayer. Fortunately, executives continued to work in the shadows until they convinced several production companies to greenlight the project. Fans who have waited more than twenty years for a sequel to be announced are finally in luck.
