Grand Regent Thragg Reveals His Plan to Revive Viltrum in ‘Invincible’

For most of the eighth and final episode of Season 4 of ‘Invincible,’ titled ‘Don’t Leave Me Hanging Here,’ Mark grapples with the aftermath of his life-or-death battle against Thragg and the Viltrumite refugees at the end of the previous episode. Due to the harshness of the events he’s experienced, the young superhero suffers from severe post-traumatic stress, even experiencing hallucinations and very disturbing visions of the chaos and destruction that Thragg and his acolytes will unleash once they arrive on Earth.

As he soars through the skies to clear his head and find some inner peace, Mark has a new vision... or does he? This time, Thragg himself appears before him, though with no intention of fighting. The monarch of Viltrum informs Nolan’s son that his compatriots have already infiltrated Earth with a firm purpose: to procreate with humans so that the Viltrumite people may prevail and increase their numbers over the years. What’s more: he praises the young man and holds him up as an example of how the mixing of Viltrumite and human DNA is more than satisfactory, resulting in offspring comparable in strength and longevity to the children of Viltrum themselves.

But it doesn’t end there: using the “an eye for an eye” analogy, the villain argues that the remaining thirty-seven Viltrumites are more than enough to completely wipe out the planet, and that this would in fact be only fair given the destruction of Viltrum at the hands of Mark, his father, and Thaedus. Nevertheless, Thragg opts for a temporary truce, promising not to interfere in Earth’s affairs as long as his people are allowed to live among humans in secret and reproduce with them. Although initially reluctant, Mark relents and accepts these terms, weary of so much death and destruction around him, leaving the future of the entire planet up in the air.

Ultimately, this season 4 finale leaves many unanswered questions, not to mention a deeply uneasy Mark at the thought that the Viltrumites now live on his planet, ready to wipe out every living thing the moment Thragg gives the order. However, anyone who has read the comics already knows that Thragg’s audacious plan doesn’t go quite as he intended—though that’s a story for another day.

In this way, ‘Invincible’ continues to prove why it is one of the most compelling superhero stories of recent times: its narrative simmers slowly, raising the stakes higher and higher, and where any character—or even entire planets and species—could vanish in the blink of an eye, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats at all times.
