The strange case of Hogwarts Legacy: why the game has taken an atypical direction

There are rumors of a Definitive Edition that will include an expansion, but Warner Bros. Games remains silent.

Hogwarts Legacy

In 2018, Eurogamer leaked an image of a yet-to-be-announced Harry Potter video game. It was described as an open-world role-playing game, a title in which the player would embody one of the students from literature’s most famous school of magic. It was Hogwarts Legacy, but fans would have to wait another five years to get a taste of it. It was released in early 2023 and was an immediate success, becoming the best-selling game of the year ahead of other major blockbusters. Any title of this nature usually comes with a post-release roadmap, although in this case it was different. There didn’t seem to be one.

In February 2023, director Alan Tew stated that they had no intention of expanding Hogwarts Legacy: “We’ve been really heads down bringing [Hogwarts Legacy] to life, so at the moment there are no current plans for DLC.” Unlike other titles, its release was staggered, first coming to PC and current-gen consoles, then to PS4 and Xbox One, and later to Nintendo Switch. Since then, they have fixed bugs and released some updates, but new content has been conspicuous by its absence. Basically, they implemented a photo mode and only shared the tools for mods on PC.

What is the future of Hogwarts Legacy?

The official answer is that there is a sequel in development and that it is a priority for Warner Bros. Games, although it will take years to complete. Beyond Hogwarts Legacy 2, Bloomberg and Insider Gaming have revealed the existence of a Definitive Edition, which, according to these sources, will include an expansion that will extend the main story and contain more than 10 hours of additional content, as well as other improvements.

Hogwarts Legacy is available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Read MeriStation USA’s review here.
