Update:

The recent ‘Super Mario Bros. Galaxy Movie’ has been a huge box office hit, and despite harsh criticism that it lacks a cohesive storyline to tie the on-screen action together, it has managed to bring about a significant change to the franchise by making a major adjustment to the relationship between Peach and Rosalina—a change that now has the direct approval of the series’ creator, Shigeru Miyamoto.

Warning: Spoilers of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie below.

During a recent interview with the Japanese website Nintendo Dream Web, regarding the upcoming release of the movie in Japan, Miyamoto discussed the possibility that the relationship depicted at the end of the film could become part of the video game canon.

“Because we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many character settings would become a constraint. I’m fine with being bound by the gameplay, but I don’t want to be bound by having created a story, which has been the reason for not making movies for many years,” Miyamoto replied to a reporter who asked about the sisters’ relationship now being canon.

“So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s backstory, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games.”
