Update:

It feels like ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie came out just yesterday, but it’s surprising that it’s already been over a month. And yes, now that its theatrical run is over, everyone’s hoping it will hit streaming platforms as soon as possible. Although the movie was scheduled to arrive this week, unfortunately it will be delayed by a couple of weeks.

Originally, the film was set to be released on VOD and digital platforms tomorrow, May 5, after about a month in U.S. theaters. But according to sources at When To Stream, it now appears that the film will not be available on these platforms until May 19, two weeks later than originally reported. The site clarifies that, for now, Universal Pictures has not announced or confirmed an official date, so we’ll have to wait and see when we’ll be able to enjoy this film from the comfort of our own homes.

However, the film’s release on May 19 makes much more sense given the strategies many studios use to transition their films from theaters to digital rental and sale. Typically, this transition occurs 45 days after the film’s theatrical release—a milestone that ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ was still days away from reaching.

How did ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ do?

The premiere of ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ was a smash hit, and its opening weekend numbers speak for themselves. The collaboration between Illumination and Nintendo has once again broken box office records, with the film grossing $372.5 million in its global opening weekend, making it the highest-grossing film of 2026 to date.

Although public and critical opinion has been divided, the same thing has happened as with the first film: audiences accept the movie for what it is, not for what critics expect it to be—a fact that has been reflected at the box office. In our The Super Mario Galaxy Movie review we wrote: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is not trying to win awards or redefine animated storytelling. It doesn’t aim for emotional depth or complex themes. Instead, it embraces constant movement, recognizable imagery, and shared nostalgia. In that sense, the film feels closer to a video game than a traditional animated feature.”
