‘The Thing’ was going to have a sequel series by the director of ‘The Walking Dead’

‘The Thing’ in mainland USA, with many protagonists and focused on mystery instead of tension and horror? It could have been true.

Although the xenomorph and the Predator were the most popular aliens of the 80s, fans of science fiction and space horror put John Carpenter’s The Thing’ on the same level, that is, on the Olympus of horror. The 1982 classic starring Kurt Russell remains four decades later as one of the biggest flagships of the industry, and although we were able to enjoy an adequate enough prequel in 2011, we would always have liked to see a sequel to the original film, which at least was in pre-production.

This has been revealed by Roy Lee, the producer now in charge of the adaptation of ‘Bioshock’, at a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Lee acknowledged that Carpenter was not involved in the project, but instead it was Frank Darabont, director of not only ‘The Walking Dead’ but also great adaptations of novels by Stephen King, such as ‘The Green Mile’, ‘The Mist’, and the acclaimed ‘Shawshank Redemption’.

The sequel to ‘The Thing’ was going to be a series set in the United States

“I was with Frank Darabont after he’d done The Walking Dead’” Lee confessed to the audience attending his talk at SDCC. “We were working on a sequel series for The Thing, which was picking up in the present day after the events of The Thing actually happened. It was done as a series, and he wanted to do it like The Walking Dead and turn it into a thing set in the U.S., but we never got it off the ground. We got a script written, but the studio hated it.”

‘The Thing’ took us to Antarctica, where an expedition of scientists encountered an alien entity capable of possessing its host, which was the greatest peculiarity of the film, since it constantly played with the tension of not knowing who carried “the thing” inside. In 2002, a video game based on the film would arrive, with notable reception, and which will soon receive a new remastered version.
