The answer may lie in a detail that many viewers have overlooked: the conversation between Rhaenyra and the Grand Septon, which references one of the best-known theories in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ universe.
An Origin Shrouded in Mystery
One of the main obstacles Rhaenyra Targaryen faces on her return to the Red Keep is the Grand Septon’s refusal to anoint her. The reason? No one has seen the remains of Aegon II. Although Rhaenyra insists, the religious leader stands firm and asserts that his gods “do not deal in dragons,” which he describes as “profane magic created in darkness and pride and lust for power, for impunity.”
