Game of Thrones
The untold story of Jamie Lannister in ‘Game of Thrones’: George R.R. Martin’s original idea
He was to be the future King of the Seven Kingdoms and the main villain of A Song of Ice and Fire.
Jamie Lannister is a key figure in the development of Westeros history. The son of Tywin Lannister, he was one of the protectors of Aegon Targaryen, the Mad King, but he assassinated him during Robert Baratheon’s rebellion, so he became known as the Kingslayer. Although he was always close to power, he never sat on the Iron Throne, although George R.R. Martin’s original idea was very different. After Robert’s death in A Song of Ice and Fire, his sons, first Joffrey and then Tommen, succeed him. Back in 1993, Jamie was supposed to have a villainous role in ‘Game of Thrones’.
According to Martin himself, in these early sketches, the line of succession after the murder of Joffrey Baratheon would not continue through his other sons-who were actually the offspring of Jamie and his sister Cersei. Instead, Jamie Lannister would murder all of his rivals before taking the crown of the Seven Kingdoms. In the current version, the character always shows affection for his brother Tyrion, even when he is seen as Joffrey’s murderer. In the original version, however, he blamed him for the murders he had committed. In addition, Sansa was pregnant by Joffrey, which would have meant killing her child, the young Stark, and her future grandchild.
Tyrion Lannister is rebelling against his brother
And what about the Starks? Their fate was not very flattering either, but their death does not seem as bloodthirsty and cruel as in the novel. According to the author, Eddard Stark’s heir wins some victories against Joffrey Baratheon’s army, but his luck gradually changes. In the end, he can do nothing against Jaime and Tyrion’s troops, so he perishes on the battlefield. Afterwards, Tyrion burns Winterfell to the ground. Knowing that Jaime Lannister has no qualms about killing members of his family, Tyrion is forced to forge alliances with his enemies. Together, they seek to eliminate the greater evil.
After the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’, HBO is preparing the premiere of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, which will premiere on Max in 2025. Meanwhile, Martin is working on the sequel to ‘Fire and Blood’ and on ‘The Winds of Winter’, the next novel in ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’.
