The upcoming ‘Star Wars’ series revives some of George Lucas’ ideas for the sequels: “It’s a way to honor that future”

In Lucas’s plan, the villain of the sequels was going to be Maul.

Update:

George Lucas was not at all pleased that Disney decided to reject his ideas for the “Star Wars” sequels. The company’s CEO at the time, Bob Iger, revealed that the filmmaker had felt betrayed. More than a decade after the acquisition of Lucasfilm, the new series in the saga will incorporate some of these ideas.

In an interview published on the official ‘Star Wars’ website, Dave Filoni—co-president of Lucasfilm—has hinted that ‘Maul - Lord of the Shadows’ will include certain elements suggested by Lucas at the time. The saga’s creator’s original plan was for Maul and his apprentice, Darth Talon, to be the villains of the sequels. However, J. J. Abrams preferred to bring Palpatine back.

From Sith to Crime Lord

“Maul is a character that’s our responsibility. George [Lucas] and I had had some talks about Maul over the years and what his plans for Maul had been. And so I felt it was a way of honoring that future that we were going to have and finally bringing some of it to light,” Filoni said.

‘Star Wars: Maul — Lord of the Shadows’ is set after the Clone Wars, during the Imperial era. Stripped of his Sith status and discarded by Darth Sidious as an apprentice, Maul reinvents himself and plunges headfirst into the world of criminal syndicates. His intention is to take revenge on his former master, a plan he hatches in secret, from the shadows. Although Talon is not present in this story, the Zabrak teams up with a Jedi Padawan.
