The wildest zombie movie of 2026 is a smash hit on opening weekend: it’s already No. 1 in its home country

‘Colony,’ the new film from the director of ‘Train to Busan,’ is a project that sparked great interest among genre fans as soon as it was announced. This comes as no surprise, as it is the latest work from Yeon Sang-ho, who has already proven he is in his element with this type of film. The movie will be released in the United States on August 28, but its opening in Korea confirms it: it is a resounding success and one of the great zombie movies of the year.

During its opening weekend in Korea, ‘Colony’ drew 200,000 moviegoers to theaters, making it the country’s top opening of 2026 after surpassing ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ (150,000). Like ‘Train to Busan,’ the plot’s central premise also revolves around an outbreak of infected individuals, though the film is set not on a train but in a skyscraper hosting a biotechnology conference. When authorities decide to quarantine the building and seal off all exits, those still inside begin a race against time to survive.

It didn’t make much of a splash, but Yeon Sang-ho has an interesting Netflix original series called ‘The Bequeathed’. It’s a thriller with horror elements that follows a woman who inherits a cemetery after the death of a relative she never met in person. Not quite sure what to do with it or how to run such a business, she suddenly finds herself dealing with a terrible crime committed at the site.
