It seems that as soon as the cancellation of E3 2023 was confirmed, Geoff Keighley announced that the Summer Game Fest continues, but it is not the only show in which it will be present. The master of ceremonies and founder of The Game Awards will return once again to host and produce the Gamescom Opening Night Live gala. This has been announced on Twitter, where he has reported that it will take place on August 22 in Cologne (Germany).

“Gamescom Opening Night Live returns live on Tuesday, August 22 from Koelnmesse in Germany,” he wrote on his social networks. “Excited to be back in Cologne with the fans and industry, streaming video game news directly to you.” As on other occasions, it is expected that there will be announcements and the odd surprise, although at the moment there are no more details about it.

Gamescom 2023 will be celebrated from August 22 to 27.

Why was E3 2023 cancelled?

On March 30, IGN shared the news that E3 2023 had been cancelled, shortly after Ubisoft announced that they wouldn’t participate in the event due to various sources, it was reported that the event would not be held either face-to-face or online. Soon after, the organization itself officially confirmed it: “RedPop and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) have announced that both digital and physical events have been cancelled.”

The ESA explained that this decision has been difficult to make because, despite the efforts of the organization and their partners, they realized that many interested companies did not have playable demos. It is not clear what the future of E3 will be as an event, although the association has highlighted that they will work together with RedPop in “future E3 events”. Time will tell what finally happens.
