Manga

This is ’Go! Go! Ackman’, Akira Toriyama’s least-known video game series that never left Japan

Akira Toriyama lent his iconic style to three Super Famicom games and one Game Boy title, although they never got to reach Western territories.

Update:
go go ackman toriyama

Akira Toriyama was one of the most prominent and important artists of our time, a figure who left behind a sense of immortality. His entire legacy in the manga, anime, and video game industries will accompany us throughout our lives and, despite its greatness, there are still works that may be unknown to the general public. It is difficult to call something made by Toriyama hidden, and even if that is not the case of ‘Go! Go! Ackman’, yes, it is a work and title that many will have heard of, but not too many may have tried.

What is ‘Go! Go! Ackman’?

The first time we see Ackman it is impossible for Trunks not to come to mind, since that design is one of the favorites from Toriyama’s outstanding career. It is a manga that was launched between 1993 and 1994 with a total of eleven chapters of five pages each. Along with the manga, there is also a 15-minute OVA available that came out in 1994. The story immerses us in the adventures of a young demon named Ackman who travels the world with the aim of killing humans to take their souls and sell them in Hell. Ackman is always accompanied by Godon, his pet devil, and he’s constantly chased by a teenage angel named Tenshi, who in his attempts to stop the demon ends up causing even more destruction than the one he is chasing.

Go! Go! Ackman on Super Famicom is a saga of platformers full of action, guaranteed fun games that, while far from excellent, remain in our memory thanks to all the charisma that their graphic appearance exudes with its Akira Toriyama style. A series of games that fans of the Japanese mangaka fell in love with and that satisfied all those who greatly enjoy this type of adventure, with a variety of weapons, situations, and enemies throughout the multiple levels that are traversed throughout the series. On the other hand, the Game Boy game has nothing to do with the Super Famicom ones, being a labyrinthine title that is reminiscent of a classic like Pac-Man.

The character’s first game came out on December 23, 1994 in Japan, while the last release hit the market on December 15, 1995. In almost a year we had four titles, three for the Super Famicom and one for the Game Boy,

The Go! Go! Ackman games are as follows:

  • Go! Go! Ackman - Super Famicom
  • Go! Go! Ackman 2 - Super Famicom
  • Go! Go! Ackman 3 - Super Famicom
  • Go! Go! Ackman - Game Boy

Go! Go! Ackman and the almost infinite Japanese video game market

Over the decades, the video game industry in Japan has stood out for having a multitude of high-quality titles that never left its borders, something especially notable in the 80s, 90s, and the first half of the 21st century. A situation in which many players decided to delve deeper and try those games full of charisma and, in many cases, have managed to be relaunched officially and with improvements.
