This is the reason why the PS5 Pro doesn’t include a disc reader
If not for production costs or selling the peripheral separately, then why doesn’t the PS5 Pro include a physical disc reader? The answer: industry shifts.
Much has been said about Sony’s decision to launch PS5 Pro without a disc reader. The console Is not exactly cheap, but it will be digital only and, although it offers the option of purchasing a reader separately, scalpers have made it impossible. What is behind this strategy? What are the real reasons behind it?
Many have argued that to begin with, the absence of a reader allows Sony to save some money on manufacturing costs. However, this is usually done to offer a more adjusted and attractive final price for the consumer. This is not the case of PlayStation 5 Pro, one of the most expensive consoles ever for the company. We talk almost $1000 If we add the disk unit and the base to hold it vertically, the two elements that we miss the most in its unboxing.
The second reason one might think of is the additional revenue that the sale of readers will bring. However, taking into account that the stock has run out and that Sony has made no attempt to replenish it, the company does not seem too interested in that source of income. In the past, we have seen scalpers hunting down PS5 30th anniversary, but on this issue, certain moves by both Sony and regular consumers have resulted in scalping to not have as big an impact as previous occasions.
So? What is the real reason? Well, it is as simple and painful as the growth of the digital market. As much as it hurts collectors and it was once believed impossible, 78% of what is sold on PlayStation 5 is in digital format. Whether games, micropayments or DLC, several studies demonstrate that the physical format provides today less than a quarter of industry sales. Sony, therefore, is simply not overly concerned that PS5 Pro comes without a reader.
This should raise new concerns for us consumers, both about video game preservation as about the price monopoly to which digital stores like the PlayStation Store could subject us. Because The future is as exciting as it is uncertain and terrifying.
