Tom Hanks explains why Woody has a bald spot in ‘Toy Story 5,’ and the reason makes perfect sense
The character returns alongside Buzz Lightyear for a new adventure.

The adventures of Woody and Buzz Lightyear continue. Pixar will release ‘Toy Story 5’ on June 19, and images and trailers for the film have already been released. One detail that has caught people’s attention is a physical change in Woody: he now has a bald spot. And yes, he is a toy, but the explanation is more rational than it might seem.
In an interview with EW, Tom Hanks, who voices the character, revealed that Woody’s hair loss isn’t due to genetics or stress. After all, animation’s most famous sheriff is just a toy. The thing is, kids have played with him a lot, and, of course, that eventually takes its toll.

The passage of time affects toys too
“He’s been played with to excess. If you put a rubber hat on top of a rubber head over and over and over again, something’s bound to wear down. So, yeah, he does have… let’s say a worn area on the back of his head.” And why does he have a belly? Same thing: it’s not from eating too many industrial pastries; there’s another explanation: “He is not molded plastic,” Hanks pointed out. “He is made of stuffing and cloth, and that stuff settles over time.”

It seems Woody needs a tune-up. Or maybe all those imperfections are proof of all the adventures he’s had over the years. One person who won’t be enjoying it is Quentin Tarantino, director of ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Reservoir Dogs’. The filmmaker loved ‘Toy Story 3’ and believes it ended exactly as it should have: “It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. And if you’ve seen the other two, it’s just devastating. But the thing is, then three years later or something, they did a fourth. I have no desire to see it. You literally ended the story as perfect as you could, so no, I don’t care if it’s good. I’m done.”
