Sometimes the true convening power of streamers and influencers is never measured, and in this case, Kai Cenat arguably went too far when he caused chaos in New York City this afternoon after a planned giveaway got out of hand.
Last Wednesday, Cenat promised a “huge giveaway” to be held this Friday at 4 PM in New York City’s Union Square Park, where he would give away prizes to those who answered “random questions”, winning gift cards, microphones, gaming chairs, headphones, to PlayStation 5 consoles, under the argument that “I feel like New York really deserves it.” Surely, what could go wrong?
What happened during the Kai Cenat giveaway in New York?
However, the situation got out of control before it could even begin, with people filling the park and the adjacent streets by 3 PM, obstructing traffic. According to a press conference held by NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, a “Level 4″ response was activated in an attempt to control the situation, however, “individuals in the park began to commit acts of violence towards the police and the public.” The police chief commented that the event took a violent turn when “people [started] walking around with shovels, axes, and other tools from the construction.”
Eventually, Cenat was removed for “security reasons,” and police are discussing possible charges of “inciting a riot” and failing to notify police of the event or obtain a permit. In addition to Cenat, arrests were made as police worked to disperse the crowd. People were also injured, both attendees and police officers.
For now, it remains to be seen what will happen to Kai Cenat. For now, he has posted a (now deleted) story on Instagram showing what happened with the following message: “I love you to the fullest, you are amazing. Stay safe.”
