War between ‘Emilia Perez’ actresses: Zoe Saldaña responds to Karla Sofia Gascon’s racist remarks
Now it remains to be seen what Selena, whom the Spaniard called a “rich rat who plays the poor thing every chance she gets,” will say. How will all this affect the Oscars?
After Karla Sofia Gascon’s xenophobic comments were leaked, the first of her co-stars to speak out was Zoe Saldaña. Considering that she is the great favorite for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and that her chances (and those of ‘Emilia Perez’) have been severely damaged, it was with great anticipation that we awaited her reaction and to what extent she would condemn the Spaniard. These were her words in the pages of The Hollywood Reporter:
“It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group. I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural and gender equity. And it just saddens me. It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now.”
“But I’m happy that you’re all here and that you’re all still showing up for Emilia because the message that this film has is so powerful and the change that it can bring forward to communities that are marginalized day in and day out is important. And all that I can attest is that all of us that came together to tell this story, we came together for love and for respect and curiosity, and we will continue to spread that message. That’s all we can say right now. Thank you.”
Karla Sofía Gascón and her attack on Selena Gomez
Among the comments that leaked from the star of “Emilia Perez” there were attacks on all groups, but also accusations against several people. One example is Miley Cyrus, whom Gascón called “a mustachioed man” and spoke of “a evil, horrible unnatural lesbian perversion”. But most striking is the tweet found about his other castmate, Selena Gomez.
“She’s a rich rat who plays the poor thing every chance she gets and will never stop picking on her ex-boyfriend and his wife,” she commented in 2022 on some pictures of Selena with Hailey Bieber, Justin Bieber’s wife.
