Warner Bros. announces the cast of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ and the new Aragorn isn’t the actor everyone expected
Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood return to Middle-earth as Gandalf and Frodo.

There have been months of speculation and rumors, but Warner Bros. Discovery has finally announced the cast of ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’. It was an open secret that Viggo Mortensen wouldn’t be playing Aragorn in the film, a fact confirmed by director Andy Serkis a few days ago. However, everyone assumed that Leo Woodall would be playing the heir to the throne of Gondor. In the end, another actor was chosen for the role.
Jamie Dornan (’Belfast,’ ‘The Fall’) will take on the role of Strider. He’ll be joined by another ranger, Halvard, played—this time—by Leo Woodall.

Returning actors and new cast members
Andy Serkis fully immerses himself in the role of the elusive Sméagol and his alter ego, Gollum. Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will return to Middle-earth to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Frodo, respectively. Lee Pace, who was part of the cast of The Hobbit trilogy, will return as Thranduil, Legolas’s father. So far, there has been no word on whether Orlando Bloom will return as the elf prince. As for Kate Winslet, the Titanic actress will play Marigol, a character about whom no details have been revealed yet.
“Across two trilogies, a mark of a Middle-earth film, has always been the formidable array of talent brought to bear in every role. ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ continues in that tradition, and I am delighted to announce the return of two of Middle-earth’s most beloved performers, alongside some exceptionally talented new additions to Tolkien’s world,” Andy Serkis said in a statement.
